Requirements

The minimum age is 16. You do not need a motorcycle street riding licence to take our courses. To get the best results from your course, certain riding abilities are prerequisites: use the guidelines below when you choose.

We run rain or shine. A FAST course is not cancelled because of a wet track, although track sessions may be delayed if heavy rain is present. If the track is flooded by very severe conditions, FAST may reschedule the course for a later date.

If you use one of our motorcycles, your package includes all the riding gear. If you ride your own bike, our top quality safety gear is still available for a small fee. At morning registration you complete a riding gear form if you chose our gear, and you must sign the track and school waivers.

Phase 1

At FAST we do not teach you how to ride a motorcycle. You need to know the basics: leave from a stop, accelerate, shift gears, slow down and stop again. You must be comfortable riding on the street at the legal speed limit, and confident riding on the track with 9 to 11 other riders who may be faster or slower than you. You need to judge the speed of other riders to pass them safely, and feel comfortable being passed. Passing zones are limited, mainly on the straightaway. Expect to negotiate about 250 turns during the day.

Phase 2

  • FAST Phase 1, or track day or lapping experience on your own bike, or motorcycle racing experience (road racing, motocross, enduro, dirt track, ice racing) on your own bike, or another motorcycle riding school in a racetrack setting on your own bike.
  • If you have not done Phase 1 you have to use your own bike.

Phase 3

  • FAST Phase 2 (or track day experience at Shannonville on your own bike and gear).
  • Confidence with increased speed and comfort around other riders.

Phase 4

  • FAST Phase 3.
  • Confidence with increased speed, more precision on a more technical track, and a physically and mentally more demanding track.

Phase R

  • Own bike only.
  • You must have attended FAST before, with a minimum of 10 to 12 track days and riding in yellow or red on regular track days, or be currently racing.
  • Phase R is on the Fabi track, a technical track that uses the long back straight.

If you use your own riding gear

  • Not crashed or damaged, and in good condition.
  • DOT or SNELL approved helmet (no open face or modular).
  • One-piece or two-piece leather, or new strong material, riding suit (pants and jacket must zip together at least at the back).
  • Motorcycle-specific boots that cover the ankles.
  • Motorcycle-specific gloves are recommended; they must completely cover the hands and fingers and fit over your sleeves.
  • A back protector is strongly recommended.

All safety riding gear must be approved by FAST Riding School. A student who does not wear proper gear is not allowed to take part in the course and no refund is issued.

If you use your own motorcycle

Your motorcycle must pass our safety inspection to take part. FAST will not work on your bike for you. See also bike preparation.

  • A 2 or 3 digit bike number on the front, at least 6 inches high. Numbers can be bought for $10 at tech inspection.
  • We must have access to your drain plug to check it is tight. Safety wiring of bolts is recommended but not mandatory.
  • We do not sell gasoline: bring your own, and enough of it.
  • Tires (new tires must be broken in; avoid slicks if possible in case of rain), chain, brake pads and brake pressure must be in good condition and not overly worn.
  • No antifreeze in the cooling system: replace it with water or special racing coolant. FAST will not do this for you at the track.
  • Any bolt that allows oil to seep out must be properly tightened, and any component must be securely fixed.
  • Lights and flashers may stay on the motorcycle but must be covered with tape.
  • The stand may stay if the spring retainer is in good condition and the stand switch works.
  • The throttle must shoot off and come back on its own, and the engine kill switch must work.
  • Brake and clutch levers must have the little ball at the end.

The own-bike preparation form is supplied by FAST on request: info@fastridingschool.com.
